YUTA OKAMURA
Japanese film director trained at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
His work blends documentary realism with narrative intimacy, focusing on memory, social systems, and human connection.
He co-produced and shot Black Box Diaries, a feature documentary nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Based in Tokyo, working internationally.
At the age of 19, he moved to the United States and enrolled in the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where he studied film directing under Emmy Award–winning director and legendary Hollywood comedy filmmaker Burnett Kellman. He graduated in 2011.
While at USC, his short films received strong recognition at international film festivals. His short film The Lost Samurai won the Grand Prize at the HATCH Film Festival, followed by the Best Short Film Award at the Brainwash Film Festival and the Editing Award at the Southern California Business Film Festival.
In 2011, his short film Waking Up achieved a historic milestone by winning Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor at the Asian on Film Awards—the first time a Japanese filmmaker received all three awards. The film also won Best Short Film at the Los Angeles Japanese Film Festival, Best Cinematography at the Women of Cinema Film Festival, and the Grand Prize at the HATCH Film Festival for two consecutive years, establishing his international reputation early in his career.
Based between Tokyo and Los Angeles, he works across a wide range of visual storytelling, including narrative films, television series, commercials, music videos, and corporate branding films, while maintaining a strong focus on cinematic filmmaking.
Since 2018, he has served as co-producer and cinematographer on Black Box Diaries, directed by Shiori Ito. The film premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and made history with its nomination for the 97th Academy Awards in the Feature Documentary category—the first such nomination for a Japanese filmmaker. The film was also nominated for a BAFTA and received the Peabody Award, widely regarded as the Pulitzer Prize of broadcast media. Black Box Diaries was released theatrically in Japan in December 2025.
In recent years, he has collaborated with Marbling Fine Arts, the oldest miniature studio in Asia, to explore a distinctive visual language that fuses miniature filmmaking, traditional special effects, and Hollywood-style VFX. Centering his work on the intersection of entertainment and social themes, he actively participates in international co-productions aimed at global audiences. Grounded in close collaboration with local communities at each filming location, he continues to pursue films that resonate across cultures and remain deeply memorable for audiences worldwide.
